There was a particular moment in my life when I told Jesus not to give me what I want.

I know that may sound a bit absurd. “Are you not supposed to ASK Jesus about what you want, Chona?” You may ask.

Well, you have a point to question me. After all, even the Bible says that when we ask, we shall receive (Matthew 7:7-8).

And I totally get that.

I am not saying that our desires are inherently wrong. In fact, God can also speak through them. When we delight ourselves to Him, the Word says, God will grant us our desires.

But at times, they can be deceiving, too, especially when our hearts are cluttered with stuff that are not of the Lord. Doesn’t the Bible also say that our hearts are deceitful above all things?

A leaf from my book Diary of Ms. True Love Waits

So when I told Jesus not to give me what I want…

…I was not trying to conceal what I wanted. But I was surrendering them to Him.

It was not easy, of course. But by His grace, I finally came into an agreement that His desires for me are way better than my own. I say “finally” because I have had a fair share of wrestles with God about what I thought was the best for me.

It was a moment of divine exchange. I had finally accepted at that moment that what He had in mind for me is greater than what I could have imagined for myself (Ephesians 3:20). And that goes not only in the matters of the heart, but even in any other areas of my life.

May I always remember this Truth Lord and always surrender what my flesh wants in exchange for what You want for me.
